The Beginning
The roots of Myers Racing Team were laid in 1963 when Fred Myers purchased his first car at the age of 18 - the infamous "beater". Fred raced the TR in numerous solo events and time trials throughout the years in Florida and Texas and was very successful until the Z cars came along. The TR was quietly retired to the garage when Fred lost a bearing in the motor and lacked the time to repair it. Between 1990 and 1992 Fred worked on getting the car running again with the help of his son, Steve, who drove the car for the first time on his graduation night in 1992.
From that night on the TR lost the nickname of the "beater", even though the brakes failed that night!!! Myers Racing Team is very fortunate to have one of the finest Chief Mechanics in the Northeast, Ed Haigh out of Morris Garage LTD in Allston, Massachusetts. Ed did extensive work on the Triumph turning it into a safe race/road car. Steve was fortunate enough to run Time Trials in the TR at NHIS. At the time, Fred was driving a Ford SHO and took the TR out for a few laps - he never drove the SHO again!!! Fred went on to win numerous titles in the COM club with the TR, including taking home three consecutive British Cup awards given to the driver scoring the most points in a British car. The TR was retired to strictly road use 3 years ago when Myers Racing Team purchased the Vette. Even though the TR is no longer raced, it is still very much a cherished member of the family.
Fred's Red Rocket
The centerpiece of Myers Racing Team is the GT1 Trans Am Corvette. The car was originally built by Peter Dues in the late 1980's and raced in the Trans Am Series. At one point, Dues set the track record at Lime Rock Park, Connecticut in the car. We purchased the Corvette in 1997, just 3 years ago, and have done extensive work on it to make it faster and safer. Fred drove the car this past summer, his rookie season, with a stock motor in the SCCA Club Racing Series. Fred won his debut race at NHIS and was consistently in the top five for the remainder of the season, finishing third in points for the New England Region. This winter, development has gone into the motor, replacing the stock motor with a true race motor. Although the new motor has not been dynode yet, it is expected to be around 600 horsepower. Myers Racing Team is very confident about Fred capturing the New England Region GT1 title this year.
